Born into a family of artists, graphic artist Caitlin Truman-Baker’s journey into the world of art was written in the stars. After studying graphic design and spending a few years working in top advertising agencies in South Africa, she took the leap to start her own design business, a decision that has shaped her life for the past twenty three years.

As I admire the Plettenberg bay artist’s creations, I find myself lost in thought, wondering about the mind behind the masterpieces. Just as I stand in awe and wonder what the Creator of the universe must be like, I wonder too what inspires Caitlin’s mind to create such work? How does she begin to bring these wonderful ideas to life? Does each piece carry a bit of her story, her life’s experiences?

Caitlin Truman-Baker’s graphic collages are like visual puzzles, filled with layers and pieces that come together to form stunning compositions. Each collage is a beautiful tapestry of colors, shapes, textures and imagery, inviting one to get lost in the complexity of her artwork and her mind. Looking at her creations, I’m drawn into a world of imagination, where every detail tells a story of a faraway world waiting to be discovered.

It’s almost like I am living inside the piece while I am creating it.

In 2016, she faced a life-threatening challenge when she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and had to undergo a “lengthy and risky operation to have it removed”. Despite the odds, she’s emerged stronger, her spirit undaunted by the obstacles in her path. In the wake of adversity, Caitlin’s perspective on life has been forever altered, that every waking moment is a precious gift to be cherished and embraced.

I can see and life goes on. Precious life! I still have it. And that in itself is a gift.

And through this experience, she’s learned to live in the present, and to see each day as a chance to pursue and enjoy the things that bring her joy. Caitlin’s perspective on life is a testament to her strength and gratitude. From this we can all learn to cherish every moment and find beauty in the everyday.
